Daniel Benner the designer and founder of Grotesque Eyewear, recently opened a new retail store in Villingendorf Germany called, Benner – Brillen Im Seecontainer. The concept behind the new shop was to work exclusively with high quality collections made in Europe and Japan and to select collections who support fair wages and work conditions for their employees.
The design and build out of the store focuses on the use of two royal blue shipping containers as the main design element. The store was designed to grab attention from the outside but provide a very clean, relaxing atmosphere on the inside. Many of the details have been custom built including a fitting table that has been create to look like a smaller versions of the shipping containers used in the construction of the store.
The store is located just outside of town in an industrial area in an effort to offer their customers such conveniences not normally found in the city such as free parking and easy entry for disabled persons. According to Benner, they also wanted a location where they were able to cut loose and party into the night without disturbing neighbors.
